Intriguing and enigmatic are two of the words that have been used to describe these works. At first glance it is not obvious from a photograph that there is no colour facing you in any of them. What you are seeing is a coloured halo created by light bouncing off the individual elements which are in fact pigmented on the reverse and float-mounted above a plain white background. This technique produces patterns of colour and shadow, which shift and alter subtly as you move around the pieces. Different lighting conditions also play a major part. All the pieces are hand-coloured and hand-cut. |

Combining a love of colour, pattern and mathematics, Rob’s work explores the reflective qualities of ink and paint and draws influence from many areas including optical art, geometry, nature and architecture. These are technically demanding pieces, many of which are designed to change depending on viewing angle and lighting conditions. “My work combines figurative, abstract and conceptual elements. A passion for optical, geometric and mathematical themes forms the basis of pieces which are often assembled from multiple smaller components and which play on the qualities of colour, reflected light and visual perception. “Recent work is centred on the reflective properties of ink and paint and draws influence from many areas including optical art, geometry and architecture. Combined with a love of colour, pattern and mathematics, I aim to create pieces with a certain amount of intrigue, which invite the viewer to interact.” Selected exhibitions and art fairs
